Special Olympics Chicago held its Bowling Tournament at Habetler Bowl this weekend. Special Olympics, which originated here in Chicago, has the mission of providing "year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community." Athletes bowled in different lanes depending on which division they qualified for, and were accompanied by friends, family, and coaches. Axis UChicago volunteers assisted with score-keeping, presenting awards, and other behind-the-scenes tournament responsibilities.
